Join the Office of Respect and supporting campus partners in welcoming activist, astronaut, and best-selling author Amanda Nguyen to Emory University on April 9th. Nguyen founded her non-profit organization, RISE, after witnessing firsthand the impact of systems on survivors. Nguyen went on to help create the Survivor Bill of Rights.

This groundbreaking legislation, which safeguards the rights of survivors in the United States, was passed unanimously by Congress in 2016 and later adopted by the UN in 2022. Nguyen will share her inspiring journey of resilience and legislative advocacy that is documented in her memoir Saving Five: A Memoir of Hope.

Since Amanda started her activism journey, her nonprofit RISE has trained over 2,000 organizers across 48 states and 4 countries who have helped pass over 117 laws. Amanda was the 2017 TIME Woman of the Year and nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize. Her most recent accomplishment includes being the first Vietnamese woman to go to space, where she conducted women's health research during her flight. Nguyen's current research effort is rooted in justice through science.
